Title
Mesolithic petit tranchet arrowhead (dorsal)
Description
English: Flint transverse arrowhead, 'petit tranchet' type, triangular in plan, lozenge-shape in profile, and flat in section. All margins have been unifacially retouched on the dorsal face and there is a bevelled 'tranchet' edge on the right margin of the dorsal face, running from the snapped proximal end above the bulb of percussion, to the apex of the triangle at the distal end.

The flint is a mottled light to dark grey colour and has the remains of fragments of cortex at the proximal end adn at the third apex of the arrowhead, at its base, where it would have been hafted onto an arrow shaft. This suggests that it was made from a local beach pebble. The length to breadth ratio is about 1:1, which is to be expected for this type of transverse arrowhead.

Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example on page 142, Fig.5.128, no.F124, which is dated to the late Mesolithic.
